Macau Customs Service officers on Wednesday searched a cargo truck and found 541 kilogrammes of undeclared fruit and vegetables being smuggled through the Barrier Gate checkpoint, the Customs Service said in a statement on Friday.

The statement said that the officers found a cargo full of undeclared fruit and vegetables including coconuts, chestnuts, and corn. The officers arrested two people, a male mainlander and a local female, aged 43 and 29 respectively.

According to the statement, the two suspects violated the Macau External Trade and regulations of the sanitary and phytosanitary control of goods. The statement added that the Customs Service would continue to investigate the case.

The term “phytosanitary” refers to the health of plants, especially the absence of pests requiring quarantine.
