Two travellers from Taiwan were arrested in separate cases for carrying prohibited weapons when they were about to depart the local airport at the weekend, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said at a regular press conference yesterday.
The two suspects are a 52-year-old man surnamed Fang who told the police that he is an engineer and a 45-year-old man surnamed Tsai who said that he is a salesman.
According to Cheong, Macau International Airport staff reported to the Public Security Police on Saturday afternoon that their departure hall security staff discovered a metal telescopic stick and a nunchaku (aka karate sticks) in the suitcase of a Taiwanese male tourist surnamed Fang. Under questioning, Fang told the police that he purchased the weapons for fitness for 400 yuan (488 patacas) through a mainland online shop during his trip to Macau.
Meanwhile, an airport staff member reported to the Public Security Police on Sunday that their departure hall security staff also discovered a metal telescopic stick in the backpack of a Taiwanese tourist surnamed Tsai.
Tsai told the police that he purchased the stick from a mainland website for 145 yuan for the purpose of testing the firmness of his company’s products, according to Cheong.
The suspects were transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing charges of possession of prohibited weapons, Cheong said.
