Local student athlete Wong Weng Ian won the gold medal in the women’s qiangshu category at the nation’s 1st Student (Youth) Games in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region yesterday, Macau’s first gold medal in the campus group, according to a statement by the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) yesterday.
Qiangshu (“red-tasselled spear skill”) is a wushu form where the participant uses a spear as the main element of the routine.
According to the statement, the competition took place yesterday morning. Wong won the gold medal with a score of 9.663, 0.003 higher than her Jiangxi opponent, and became the champion of the women’s qiangshu.
Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) Director Kong Chi Meng said in the statement that he was very pleased that Macau athletes won their gold medal in the campus group after winning a gold medal in the open group yesterday.
Kong also said he appreciated that Macau’s student-athletes have been able to take care of their studies while continuing their training, and win medals in such a high-level competitive games where athletes from all around the nation are gathered, which Kong described as “encouraging”.
By last night, Macau had won two gold medals, one in the women’s qiangshu (campus group) and the other in the women’s 50m breaststroke (open group).
