A woman from the mainland was arrested on Monday for engaging in illegal currency exchange activities, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Chong identified the suspect as a 37-year-old female surnamed Huang who told the police that she is jobless.
According to Chong, the police received a report about an illegal currency exchange activity from a casino in Cotai on Monday. Security staff of the casino discovered that Huang was engaged in an illegal currency exchange deal to a gambler. Huang was apprehended by the security staff and transferred to the police. The police later found the gambler in the casino who cooperated as a witness in the investigation.
Under questioning, Huang admitted to exchanging chips worth HK$1,500 with the gambler for 1,500 yuan. She also admitted to having engaged in illegal currency exchange activities since the beginning of this month. Huang said that she had earned HK$60 for every HK$1,000 exchanged. She told the police that she had made a total profit of HK$130. The police seized a total of HK$120,000 in cash and chips and a mobile phone from Huang.
Huang has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an illegal currency exchange charge, according to Chong.
