Integrated resort operator MGM said in a statement yesterday that its residency “Macau 2049” has marked a new milestone, with its 100th performance celebrated on Wednesday.

Created by MGM and acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou, the eight-chapter show puts together state-of-the-art stage visuals and sound effects to reimagine eight forms of Chinese intangible cultural heritage.

The MGM statement noted that the achievement also highlights the “futuristic reinterpretation of China’s intangible cultural heritage and the humanised application of cutting-edge technology to global audiences”.

A new “Mystery Audience” campaign was recently launched to commemorate the milestone, drawing thousands of applicants, the statement added, with those selected joining behind-the-scenes tours and interactive experiences featuring elements of intangible cultural heritage.

MGM also organised photo opportunities, interactive sessions with robots, limited-edition souvenirs, the premiere of a backstage documentary, and a group photo with the full cast, among other activities, for the audience.

Moreover, the statement pointed out that the show has had over 30 percent of the show’s audience come from overseas, highlighting its “growing global appeal and its ability to ignite international interest in traditional Chinese culture”.

The statement said that the residency will continue to grow and innovate through “steady performances while advancing content development and exploring broader cross-sector collaborations”.

Plans are underway to collaborate with domestic universities, digital art labs, and cultural institutions to launch the “Future Stage Lab” initiative, which aims to “discover new ways of demonstrating intangible cultural heritage through technological innovation, further promoting the inheritance and revitalisation of Chinese culture while expanding its global reach and influence”, according to the statement.
