Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun announced during a press conference at Wynn Palace in Cotai yesterday that the “WYNN CUP – 3X3 GREATER BAY AREA TOUR” will be held from next month to the first 10 days of October in GBA cities, and the finals will take place in Macau from October 10-16.

The Greater Bay Area (GBA) comprises the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau and nine cities in Guangdong – Dongguan, Foshan, Guangzhou, Huizhou, Jiangmen, Shenzhen, Zhaoqing, Zhongshan, and Zhuhai.

According to Pun, the event is hosted by the bureau and StarMac Entertainment & Production Limited and co-organised by the Macau-China Basketball Association and Absolute 3x3 Basketball in conjunction with Wynn Resorts Macau as the sponsor.

Pun said that with the success of “FIBA 23 Macau Masters – Wynn Cup GREATER Bay Area Qualifying Tournament” which was held from October 4-10 last year, this year will “continue to extend the energy and exciting atmosphere by holding the ‘WYNN CUP – 3X3 Greater BAY AREA TOUR’.”

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) is headquartered in Geneva.

Pun said that apart from holding the event at local tourist attractions, this year the competition will be expanded to the GBA cities of Dongguan, Foshan, Guangzhou, Huizhou, Jiangmen, Shenzhen, Zhaoqing, Zhongshan and Zhuhai, adding that the winning team will earn a cash prize of over 700,000 patacas.

According to a statement by the bureau, the final tournaments will be held in Largo do Pagode da Barra, Ruins of St. Paul’s, Praça do Tap Seac, and Wynn Palace in Cotai. The statement said that the bureau hopes that the tournaments held in the nine GBA cities in Guangdong can promote sports interaction between Macau and the nine cities in the neigbhouring province, with the aim of revitalising Macau’s sports and tourism sector and thus promote Macau’s economic diversification.

The statement noted that the first event of the tournament will be held in Huizhou from June 18 to 19. Each area’s participants in the top eight will attend the final tournaments in Macau, the statement added. The statement underlined that applications for open and women’s groups will be started on September 1 on the competition website: www.macao3x3basketball.com/.

3X3 basketball perhaps to be included in 15th National Games: Pun

Meanwhile, Pun told reporters after the press conference that his bureau has been discussing with the sports departments of Guangdong and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) the sports to be included in the 15th National Games which will be held in 2025, adding that there is a high possibility of Macau hosting 3X3 basketball as one of the sports.

The 15th National Games will be co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.

Pun said that his bureau has been in touch with mainland entities to introduce some mainland brand tournaments, such as basketball and tennis, to Macau in order to promote the local sports and tourism sectors.

Moreover, when reporters asked him about the possibility of inviting foreign racers to join this year’s 69th Macau Grand Prix, he replied that there will be a final decision on the matter “before or after” the summer holidays.
