Macau's gross gaming revenue rose 15.8 percent month-on-month to 7.8 billion patacas in December, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) announced today.
December was the casino sector's second best revenue month in 2020, after January when gross gaming revenue amounted to 22.1 billion patacas.'
Macau confirmed its first COVID-19 case on January 22. The negative impact of the novel coronavirus epidemic began to hit the casino sector in February.
Year-on-year, last month's casino receipts fell 65.8 percent. '
The sector's 2020 gross gaming revenue dropped 79.3 percent to 60.4 billion patacas, 36.6 percent of which was generated by January's receipts. Macau's casinos have suffered negative year-on-year growth since October 2019.
According to the latest available DICJ figures,37 casinos owned by six rival operators were in business at the end of the third quarter 2020, when the number of gaming tables stood at 5,900 and the number of slot machines amounted to 8,244.
The number of gaming tables and slot machines has declined considerably since the end of 2019 when 6,739 gaming tables and 17,000 slot machines were in operation.
In 2019, Macau's gross gaming revenue dipped 3.4 percent to 292.4 billion patacas.
