Benson Lam Iam Sang, a local artist-cum-interior designer who designs and makes 3D paper art lanterns and free standing 3D decorations, has an exhibition of his work at Voyage Café in Rue do Padre Antonio Roliz just off Avenida do Ouvidor Arriaga to celebrate the Chinese New Year (CYN) until the end of the month. He will also be holding three workshops at MGM COTAI for Valentine’s Day.
The Macau Post Daily spoke to Lam over lunch in Voyage Café earlier this week about the exhibition and the workshops.
Lam said, “This is the first time I have had an exhibition in a commercial space and feel that it is the most effective way for the exhibits’ exposure, and as more people visit the café I can reach my targeted audience. My Facebook page DogQmen has received a lot of visits as the café has put a QR code on all the tables. Because of this I have had teachers contact me to do 10 workshops in September for the teaching staff.”
He added, “I am preparing some ideas of what to do but also thought I could do ABC and 123 in 3D paper art as teaching materials.”
The 3D paper art at the café consists of designs related to the Chinese New Year like an Ox in Largo do Senado that is in the traditional blue and white Portuguese tiles, a free standing oxen, and a lion’s head with the same tile design for the Lunar New Year and hearts for Valentine’s Day.
The workshops at ‘M Art MGM COTAI will be held on February 7, 13 and 14 in celebration of Valentine’s Day when participants can make a 3D heart shaped lamp that can be used to hold a mobile phone or photographs as a special gift for a loved one.
Lam said, “MGM contacted me about this workshop, I think they saw my work somewhere or on my Facebook page so I am making three lions, a Chinese stone lion, a lion dance head and a gold lion that they can use as decorations around the resort. Also, the people who make the best light boxes during the workshop will receive a 3D lamp as a prize.”
Asked what his plans are for this year as 2020 was not the best for exhibitions, Lam said, “In my spare time I may start to design pop-up greeting cards and a shadow box design as those are related with paper art”.
Anyone interested in taking part in the workshops in MGM COTAI may call 8806 8888, email to hotelenquiry@mgm.mo or go to the ’M Art or Concierge counter. It will be on a first-come-first-served basis with a maximum of 10 places, costing 288 patacas including all materials.
