A mainlander was arrested for stealing valuables and cash worth more than 40,000 patacas on eight occasions in just three days from residential flats, restaurants, an office, a memorial hall and other places in various districts after arriving in Macau, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong said at a regular press conference on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old jobless suspect surnamed Yu holds an Exit-Entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macau, colloquially known as “Two-way Permit”.
According to Lam, the Public Security Police (PSP) received eight separate theft reports on Saturday and Sunday, involving two residential flats in Taipa, a memorial hall in the northern district, a restaurant in Coloane, three restaurants in Taipa and an office in Coloane, involving valuables and cash totalling more than 40,000 patacas.
Thanks to CCTV footage, PSP officers identified and located Yu and arrested him at a hostel in the city centre on Sunday. The officers seized a laptop, a purse, four smartphones and six bank cards in Yu’s guestroom. According to Lam, Yu confessed that all the items found in the room were stolen goods.
Yu told the police that he arrived in Macau last Friday to gamble and that he committed the eight thefts “at random”.
Yu said that since he was not familiar with Macau, he wandered around and went in and out of the targeted premises first before stealing. He claimed that he had spent all the 15,000 patacas he stole from the office in Coloane.
Yu has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an aggravated theft charge, according to Lam.
