Macau Legend Development Ltd. will “actively” invest more in supporting the establishment of Macau as a world centre of tourism and leisure, strengthen interaction between tourism and related industries, and deepen cross-border integration of cultural tourism, Levo Chan Weng Lin, the company’s co-chairman, executive director and CEO, said yesterday.
The central government has urged Macau to transform itself into a world centre of tourism leisure.
Chan made the remarks in a speech at a Spring Festival media luncheon hosted by the company at Macau Fisherman’s Wharf’s Convention and Exhibition Centre. Macau Legend Development co-owns and runs Macau Fisherman’s Wharf (MFW).
Chan also said that Macau Legend Development was “now working on a new development plan for Macau Fisherman’s Wharf, and we will be sharing the details with all of you when it’s ready.”
Meanwhile, Melinda Chan Mei Yi, executive director of Macau Legend Development and president of Macau Fisherman’s Wharf, told reporters on the sidelines of the luncheon that the waterfront entertainment complex plans to host more non-gaming tourism activities.
Melinda Chan predicted that the group’s gaming and non-gaming businesses will not recover until the second half of this year. Macau Legend Development runs three casinos on behalf of SJM.
Macau’s tourism sector has been severely affected by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the local economy.
She urged the local government to discuss with the central government in Beijing the possibility of speeding up the resumption of mainlanders’ Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) permits for visits to Macau, including the speedy re-launch of online IVS applications for residents of Guangdong province, in order to attract more mainland tourists to Macau as a way of boosting its economy.
Melinda Chan, the wife of businessman and former lawmaker David Chow Kam Fai, also said she hoped that the Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo (HKBPE) could be held at MFW this year. The fair was postponed sine die last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
When asked by the media whether she would run in this autumn’s Legislative Assembly elections, Melinda Chan, a former lawmaker, said that “at this moment” she had no plans to join the race. She also said that her company was still interested in bidding for one of Macau’s gaming concessions next year when the current ones are expiring.
Her husband has for many years expressed interest in owning one of the concessions.
