One of Hong Kong's largest cinema chains, UA Cinemas, announced today that it is closing after 36 years "due to unavoidable and devastating pressure faced by our operations since the outbreak of the [novel] coronavirus pandemic."
"This is definitely a painful and difficult decision," said a statement on the company's website. At the time of its abrupt closure today it ran six cineplexes in Hong Kong.
However, a spokesperson for Macau's 1,000-seat UA Galaxy Cinemas at Galaxy Macau resort in Cotai told The Macau Post Daily today that the 10-screen cineplex "operates as usual" and will continue in business.
US Galaxy Cinemas is equipped with 3D technology and a "groundbreaking" 4K laser projection system, according to its website. It is Macau's only multiplex.
