Macau’s population rose by 3,500 year-on-year to 683,100 at the end of last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced yesterday.
Females accounted for 53.2 percent of the population.
A DSEC statement pointed out that Macau’s population continued to age last year, with the ageing ratio rising to 97.1 percent.
The local population, excluding non-resident workers and non-local students living in Macau, increased by 1.6 percent year-on-year to 564,100.
The elderly took up 15.7 percent of the local population, while young people (from birth to the age of 14) accounted for 16.1 percent.
The statement noted that the elderly dependency ratio for the local population was 22.9 percent in 2020, indicating that about five adults supported one senior citizen.
A total of 2,754 marriage registrations were recorded last year, down by 26 percent year-on-year. The median age at first marriage was 30 years for the males and 28.2 years for the females. A total of 1,319 divorce cases were recorded last year.
At the end of last year, Macau’s number of households rose by 2,200 year-on-year to 199,700.
A total of 2,230 deaths among the population were recorded in Macau last year.
The number of non-resident workers stood at 177,663 at the end of last year, a decrease of 18,875 year-on-year. The decline in the number of non-resident workers has been attributed by analysts to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the local economy.
