An exhibition of paintings and sketches by local artist Hon Cheng entitled “Hon • Sketching 2”, is on display at the 10 Fantasia gallery.
The event is being co-hosted by 10 Fantasia – A Creative Industries Incubator and the St. Lazarus Church District Creative Industries Promotion Association. The exhibition is sponsored by the public Macau Foundation (FM).
According to an article by the organisers, the exhibition displays 45 sketches which cover a wide range of features Hon created in recent years, including Macau’s street views, the combination of nature and historical buildings, trails which people rarely go to, quiet corners next to the hustle and bustle of the city, and the city’s bucolic waterfront.
Hon told The Macau Post Daily in a phone interview yesterday that she was born in Beijing and moved to Macau in 1980 where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual Arts (Education) from the Macau Polytechnic Institute (IPM) in 2009. She has been an art teacher at Macau Baptist College for 17 years and actively has participated in exhibitions held in the mainland and Macau since 1984. The current exhibition is the 2nd series of her sketching. The first series was exhibited in 2018.
Hon said in a speech at the opening ceremony of the exhibition on Saturday that “these landscape sketches have broadened my horizons and enriched my teaching experience. I look for my soulmates in the paintings. Only by insisting on sketching outdoors am I able to coincide my emotions and mood, at the same time to get inspired and help my professional growth. We always grow in learning and learn in our growth.
“I have met many well-known painters and senior artists in the past few years and it has been a big motivation for me after seeing their works. There is a certain gap between my work and theirs, so I have to work hard with a persistent attitude, and I have developed the habit of sketching outdoors with self-discipline...so my pressure lies in this place,” Hon said.
The exhibition runs until March 28 in two rooms, C01 and C02, at 10 Fantasia, which opens daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (closed in Mondays), in 10 Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro. Admission is free.
