A mainland man was arrested on Tuesday for taking an illegal drug known as “Blue Gremlin” in a hotel guestroom and possessing drug-taking paraphernalia, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Kam Fai said at a regular press conference on Wednesday.

The jobless suspect surnamed Guan is in his forties.

According to Cheong, an employee of a hotel in the city centre reported to the Judiciary Police on Tuesday that a member of the cleaning staff discovered several syringes suspected to have been used for injecting drugs in a guestroom earlier that day.

PJ officers went to the hotel to investigate and intercepted Guan at the hotel later that day with the assistance of hotel staff. The officers seized from Guan’s rucksack five “Blue Gremlin” tablets and a hypodermic needle for drug injection, and several syringes which had been found in Guan’s room.

Under questioning, Guan confessed that he had bought the drugs on the mainland and smuggled them to Macau because of his chronic illness. Guan tested positive for “Blue Gremlin”, Cheong said.

Cheong did not mention what type of chronic illness the suspect is suffering from.

According to Cheong, the Judiciary Police are continuing their investigation to trace the source of the drugs and the possible involvement of other suspects.

Guan was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Wednesday, facing charges of drug abuse and possession of drug-taking paraphernalia, according to Cheong.

According to the website of the Hong Kong Security Bureau’s Narcotics Division, “Blue Gremlin” is a hypnotic that can cause, among other things, hostility and ataxia.
