A non-resident worker from the mainland took upskirt photos of a woman when she was on an escalator at the Barrier Gate border checkpoint on Tuesday, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said at a regular press conference on Wednesday.

Wong identified the suspect as a 52-year-old surnamed Yang who told the police that he works in Macau as a cleaner.

After walking into the Barrier Gate checkpoint’s departure hall from the escalator on Tuesday morning, a traveller told the woman that he had seen a man upskirting her when they were on the escalator. The traveller pointed at a man – Yang – who was walking ahead and told the woman that it was him who had taken upskirt photos of her, according to Wong.

The local woman in her thirties then stopped Yang and saw him deleting some photos on his smartphone, because of which she argued with him, Wong said, adding that the quarrel drew police officers’ attention in the departure hall.

According to Wong, the police officers found five upskirt photographs in the smartphone’s recycle bin. The woman confirmed that three of them were of her.

Under questioning by the police, Yang admitted to taking the photos of the woman out of “curiosity”. Yang also told the police that the other two photos were taken at the underground shopping centre next to Zhuhai’s Gongbei checkpoint last month, according to Wong.

Yang has been transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) for further questioning, facing an invasion of privacy charges.
