Representatives of the District Development Promotion Association yesterday submitted 500 registered voters’ signatures endorsing the group’s candidacy in the upcoming direct legislative election to the Legislative Assembly Electoral Affairs Commission (CAEAL).

The association, which was set up in 2018, is a think tank studying daily life matters affecting civil society, urging the government to come up with policies to improve residents’ daily lives.

The direct and indirect legislative elections will take place on September 12.

The officially required maximum is 500 signatures of registered voters while the minimum number is 300. Each registered voter can only endorse one group.

Speaking to reporters at the Public Administration Building in Rua do Campo, Chan Tak Seng, the association’s chairman, said that his group will focus on issues such as urban planning, illegal inns, and sham marriages.

Chan said that his candidacy list would comprise professionals from the legal and other sectors as well as civic leaders working for the community.

The group did not run in the Legislative Assembly’s (AL) direct election four years ago when 25 candidacy lists vied for the 14 seats at stake.
