A Mongolian man last week allegedly stole four bottles of perfume, a T-shirt and a dress worth more than 6,000 patacas from a shop in a hotel in Cotai while another Mongolian man last week also allegedly stole two bottles of whitening essence worth over 5,000 patacas from another shop in the same hotel, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Choi Iok Kin said at a regular press conference on Wednesday.

While one of the shoplifting suspects was arrested last Saturday, the other managed to avoid arrest, Choi said.

The arrested suspect, surnamed Baatarsurem, who is in his twenties, told the police that he works as a chef.

According to Choi, PSP officers were on patrol outside a hotel in Cotai last Saturday when an employee of the shop asked for help. The sales assistant told the officers that he was following two men as one of them – the one who later managed to avoid arrest– had stolen two bottles of whitening essence from the shop last Wednesday.

The sales assistant told the police that he had scrutinised the shop’s CCTV footage and identified the shoplifting suspect when he visited the shop again with another man on that day.

When the two men left the shop the sales assistant followed them and asked the police officers on patrol outside the hotel to apprehend the duo.

The officers later intercepted Baatarsurem outside the hotel and took him to the hotel’s security office for questioning.

Choi said the PSP officers seized four bottles of perfume and two tems of clothing – a T-shirt and a dress – from Baatarsurem’s bag. According to Choi, the items were stolen from another shop in the hotel.

Baatarsurem denied stealing the items, claiming that he was only keeping them for a Mongolian friend. At the time of Wednesday’s press conference, the police were still looking for Baatarsurem’s accomplice who allegedly stole the two bottles of whitening essence.

Baatarsurem was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Sunday, facing a theft charge, according to Choi.
