For the second consecutive year a June 4 vigil organised by local activists has not been greenlighted by the Public Security Police (PSP), veteran non-establishment lawmaker Ng Kuok Cheong has told Portugal’s newswire Lusa, the Portuguese-language radio channel of government-owned broadcaster TDM reported yesterday.

Rádio Macau quoted Ng as saying that the Public Security Police had informed the organisers yesterday that the vigil could not go ahead because of COVID-19 prevention and control measures.

Last year’s vigil was not authorised for the same reason.

Ng, according to the report, said that the PSP decision was “irrational” and due to “political considerations”.

Rádio Macau quoted Ng as saying that the vigil’s organisers planned to appeal the decision to the Court of Final Appeal (TUI).

Pre-COVID-19, the vigil had been organised annually by a group of activists including Ng and fellow non-establishment lawmaker Au Kam San. A few hundred people attended the vigil each time in the past two decades.

Ng’s Macau Democratic Development Union (UMDD) published on its Facebook page yesterday what the activists described as the copy of a Chinese-language letter from the Public Security Police about its decision not to authorise next month’s vigil.
