Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) ex-president Jackson Chang will be retried for bribe-taking, money laundering and abuse of power, the Court of Second Instance (TSI) has decided in an appellate procedure, the Portuguese-language radio channel of public broadcaster TDM reported today.

According to the report, Chang - aka as Cheong Chou Weng - was however acquitted of the crime of breach of secrecy. The Court of Second Instance upheld his Court of First Instance (TBM) sentence for inaccurate income declaration, fixing it at a suspended prison term of 11 months. However, the sentence can still be altered by his retrial.

The Court of First Instance had acquitted Chang of the crimes of bribe-taking, money laundering and abuse of power. The Public Prosecutions Office (MP) had appealed the lower court's sentence.

Meanwhile, former IPIM executive director Gloria Batalha Ung's appeal against her Court of First Instance sentence was upheld by the Court of Second Instance, which consequently acquitted her of the crimes of breach of secrecy and abuse of power, thereby annulling her TJB sentence of one year and nine months behind bars.

The so-called IPIM case involves alleged corruption and a host of other crimes concerning the institute's residency scheme for investors and professionals which has meanwhile been revised.

IPIM is a public institution tasked with promoting trade and attracting investment.

The TDM report did not say when Chang's retrial will take place.
