The Transport Bureau (DSAT) has lengthened some of the parallel parking spaces for cars to 5.5 metres on Rua de Santa Clara (家辣堂街), the street near the Octagonal Library Pavilion, the entrance to S. Francisco Garden, and the Macau Diocese-run Cineteatro cinema.
The lengthened parking spaces came into use on Tuesday, a DSAT statement said that day.
The statement said that the bureau has decided to roll out a measure to gradually lengthen street parking spaces for cars across the city after considering that more and more newly purchased cars over recent years are longer than previously, based on which, the statement said, lengthening street parking spaces aims to make it easier for drivers to park their cars.
The statement noted that currently street parking spaces for cars in Macau are normally 5 metres long with a width of 2 to 2.5 metres, adding that with the city’s socioeconomic development and residents’ changing preferences for cars, a higher percentage of newly registered cars have been longer in recent years.
Consequently, the statement said, the bureau has decided to lengthen street parking spaces for cars across the city to 5.5 metres in phases after considering various factors such as safety for pedestrians, driving safety, and the number of parking spaces available.
In the first phase, according to the statement, the bureau will gradually lengthen street parking spaces for cars in different areas in Nam Van district, involving about 130 parking spaces in total.
