A trading company employee was arrested on Tuesday at the Barrier Gate checkpoint for embezzling more than 70,000 patacas from his employer in March and gambling it away, Judiciary Police (PSP) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said at a press conference on Friday.

The 43-year-old local suspect is surnamed Vong.

According to Chong, the trading firm owner reported to the Judiciary Police on March 13 that one of his employees surnamed Vong had embezzled more than 70,000 patacas from his company, and he was unable to contact Vong. The owner told the police that Vong started working for the company last October tasked with collecting money from local pharmacies. The owner said that Vong went to a pharmacy to collect money on March 10 as usual, but afterwards he was unable to contact him. The owner suspected that Vong had embezzled the money and reported to the police a loss of 64,000 patacas and HK$6,600 (6,800 patacas).

Chong said PJ officers arrested Vong on Tuesday when he was about to leave Macau via the Barrier Gate checkpoint. Under questioning, Vong denied committing the crime but the Judiciary Police discovered information about gambling on his smartphone. Vong finally admitted to embezzling the money and gambling it all away in a casino in the city centre.

Vong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of abuse of trust – involving a considerable amount, officially defined as ranging between 30,000 and 150,000 patacas, according to Chong.
