The Taipa elevated walkway along Avenida de Guimarães, the construction of which started in the fourth quarter of 2018, finally opened to the public on Saturday, a joint statement by the Transport Bureau (DSAT), Lands, Public Works and Transport Bureau (DSOPT) and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said on Friday.
According to the statement, the elevated walkway is officially open to the public because of which all the zebra crossings on the road below have been removed. The statement noted that the walkway is 10.6 metres high, 4.5 metres wide and 700 metres long. The statement pointed out that it goes along Avenida de Guimarães, crossing Rua de Nam Keng, Rua de Coimbra, Rua de Seng Tou, Rua de Bragança and Rotunda do Estádio.
The statement noted that the walkway connects Macau Stadium to the Stadium Station of the Light Rail Train (LRT). The statement noted that there are four access points that have lifts and escalators. The statement stressed that residents can use the elevated walkway to access nearby housing estates, community facilities, parks, schools, and the sports stadium and LRT station, adding that it provides an easier access for residents to visit Taipa Village and Cotai.
The statement said that in order to simplify the road instructions for vehicles, the DSAT has kept the same rules for the junction between Rua de Bragança and Avenida de Guimarães – in the section of Rua de Bragança near Nova Taipa motorists can only turn left into Supreme Flower City. Meanwhile, at Rua de Nam Keng near the Affiliated School of the University of Macau motorists can only turn left into Avenida de Guimarães. The statement also said that at Rotunda Dr. Sun Yat Sen entering Avenida de Guimarães, vehicles cannot turn right into Rua de Nam Kengnear Nova City.
The statement stressed that the bureau has visited community groups to listen to residents’ opinion and will continue to observe the usage of the elevated walkway.
