Macau's number of the unemployed dropped to 11,100 in the April-June employment survey period, down by 800 from the previous survey conducted between March and May this year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.
According to a statement by the bureau last week, Macau's general unemployment rate stood at 2.9 percent in the April-June survey period, while local residents' unemployment rate amounted to 3.9 percent, down by 0.1 and 0.2 percentage points respectively from the previous period (March-May 2021).
The general unemployment rate comprises local residents and non-resident workers (NRWs).
The underemployment rate dropped by 0.7 percentage points to 3.5 percent.
The labour force living in Macau totalled 387,000. The labour force participation rate stood at 68.3 percent.
Total employment was 375,900, while the number of employed resident amounted to 276,400, down by 2,800 and 2,200 respectively from the previous period.
Among the unemployed looking for a new job, most were previously employed by gaming/junket operators and the construction sector.
Based on immigration records, an average of 84,300 Macau residents and NRWs worked in Macau but lived outside the special administrative region during the April-June survey period. When including these employees, Macau's total labour force amounted to 471,300, a decrease of 2,900 from the March-May period.
Macau's median monthly employment earnings in the second quarter increased by 200 patacas quarter to quarter to 15,500 patacas (US$1,936), with those working for gaming/junket operators and in the construction sector earning 19,800 patacas and 15,000 patacas respectively. Employed local residents' median earnings remained the same as in the previous quarter, at 20,000 patacas
At the end of March Macau's population stood at 682,500, according to the latest available official demographics.
