A local woman, in her seventies, was arrested this week for stealing a smartphone left on an ATM in Iao Hon district, according to a statement by the Public Security Police (PSP) on Tuesday.

According to the statement, a citizen recently reported to the Public Security Police that he or she had left a smartphone worth about 3,500 patacas on an ATM near Bairro Iao Hon after withdrawing cash. The victim, whose gender was not revealed, told the police that he or she put the smartphone and a MACAU Pass on the ATM but left the smartphone behind. The victim returned to the ATM but was unable to find the phone and reported the case to the police.

Thanks to CCTV footage, the Public Security Police identified a woman as the suspect and told her to report to a police station on Monday. Under questioning, she admitted to stealing the phone out of greed. She told the police that she took the smartphone to the mainland where she struck a barter deal to cover the cost of having her smartphone’s screen repaired in exchange for the stolen phone, the statement said.

The woman has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft-by-finding charge, according to the statement.
