A man from the mainland was arrested last week for cheating a man out of 25,000 yuan (31,000 patacas) in a gambling chips exchange deal, according to a Judiciary Police (PJ) statement this week.

The statement said that a security guard of a casino-hotel resort in Cotai reported to the Judiciary Police on September 22 that a man had been cheated out of 25,000 yuan by someone.

The victim, who is from the mainland, told the police that the suspect met him in the casino and the victim asked if the supect could exchange casino chips worth HK$30,000 into 25,000 yuan for him. The suspect showed him the chips and he transferred the money into a designated account provided by the suspect who later claimed he had not received the money and refused to give him the chips. The victim suspected that he had been cheated, grabbed the chips from suspect and approached the casino security guard for help.

PJ officers rushed to the scene and took the suspect to a police station for questioning. They discovered that the suspect had deliberately provided the victim with details of the account of another person in order to cheat him by falsely claiming that he had not received the money.

The suspect has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a fraud charge, according to the statement.
