Severe Tropical Storm "Kompasu" is expected to enter Macau's typhoon watch area around 0:00 tonight, the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement this afternoon.

The bureau forecast that Kompasu will intensify tomorrow and on Wednesday, "moving quickly across the northern part of the South China Sea."

The observatory predicted that it will come closest to Macau early on Wednesday, around 400 km south of Macau, and move towards Hainan province.

The statement underlined that due to the combined impact of Kompasu and a northeastern monsoon, the weather in Macau will be unsettled in the next few days.

"Winds will strengthen significantly, with the possibility of reaching wind force Level 8, as well as thunderstorms," the statement said, adding that due to the simultaneous impact of strong winds and astronomical high tide, flooding of around 0.50 metres was expected in the city's low-lying areas in the next two days.

Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Observatory said today that Kompasu was expected to come within 800 km of Hong Kong overnight and to be closest to the city on Wednesday.

Hong Kong's meteorologists forecast that Kompasu "will likely skirt around 400 km to the south of Hong Kong by then, bringing widespread rainstorms and squalls, and winds that may reach gale force over some areas," public broadcaster RTHK reported this afternoon.
