A suspected voyeur, a male non-resident worker from the mainland, was arrested on Monday on the Hengqin campus of a university earlier that day, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong said at a press briefing yesterday.
The 38-year-old suspect surnamed Lin told the police that he works as an air-conditioning technician.
Lam did not identify the university. However, the public University of Macau (UM) is the only university on Hengqin island.
According to Lam, a university management office staff member of the university informed the police on Monday morning about a Peeping Tom case earlier that day. Lam said a female university student from the mainland told the management staff that she had seen a man on the campus peeping at her through the bathroom window when she got undressed to have shower. She screamed and ran out of the bathroom, got redressed and reported the case to the university’s management office staff. The victim said that the bathroom window was broken and she was unable to close it.
Lam said that PSP officers went to the scene where the management office staff told them that they had hired two technicians to repair air-conditioners on the campus on that day. The officers later intercepted Lin on the campus. Under questioning, Lin denied peeping at the student, saying that the split-system AC unit that he was repairing was connected to the bathroom. The Public Security Police are continuing their investigation into the case, Lam said.
Lin has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an invasion of privacy charge, according to Lam.
