The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) pledged in a statement last week that it will continuously improve its rubbish collection facilities.

According to the statement, the bureau has made improvements by upgrading suitable rubbish collection points into compacting waste bins, improving rubbish transportation and conducting research projects to improve the conditions of using the facilities.

The statement noted that to improve the city’s rubbish disposal capacity, reduce odour, sewage overflow and the frequency of rubbish collection, the bureau has added seven compacting waste bins in various districts in the peninsula and Taipa.

Meanwhile, to reduce the number of rubbish bins from high-rise buildings being put out in the street for collection, reduce hygiene and noise problems, and alleviate impacts on the community environment and traffic, the bureau plans to organise the rubbish disposal methods of those buildings around the compacting waste bins in order to enable citizens to directly dispose of rubbish into the compactors, the statement added.

The statement said that more improvements were also made to the sealing performance of garbage collection facilities and a study was conducted about introducing automatic doors for compacting trash bins and the addition of external cabins to the 1,100 litre dumpsters. The statement said that improving these facilities can decrease exposure to garbage, reduce odour emission and improve facility use and hygiene conditions, while improving the public’s perception.

The statement pointed out that a sample of the external cabin of the 1,100 litre dumpsters was placed in Estrada de D. João Paulino in mid-September, while compacting waste bins with automatic doors were placed in different locations for residents’ trial. The facilities will be monitored by the bureau to assess whether they are suitable for the city, the statement added.

The statement underlined that there are currently 105 compacting waste bins in the city and street rubbish collection points have been reduced to 58, while the number of 1,100 litre dumpsters have been decreased from 1,600 to 109.
