Taipa and Coloane Community Service Consultative Council members urged the government to improve and expand the number of sports facilities during a regular meeting at the Islands District Public Services Centre in Seac Pai Van yesterday.

Council members Lam Ka Chun and Lo Chung Yee said that the city’s sports facilities needed to be upgraded, and there should be more of them. Lam said that the distribution of sports venues was uneven, resulting in inconvenience for Taipa residents who are keen to do sports. Lam suggested that the government should consider setting up more sports facilities in the land reclamation areas around Avenida de Kwong Tung, adding that the government should liaise with schools in Taipa to open their sports facilities and courts to their students during public holidays.

Lo expressed the view that the sports facilities in Seac Pai Van have long been insufficient, adding that the area’s residents have been receiving confusing information from the Sports Bureau (ID), Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM), and Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) about renting procedures for facilities and venues. Lo commented that the government should make good use of empty plots of land to set up sports facilities, and encourage schools to open their sports fields to the public. He also suggested that the government improve its registration and booking systems.

Meanwhile, fellow council members Ng Hong Kei and Choi Seng Hon said that pedestrian crossings should be improved. Ng suggested that the government establish more convex mirrors at crossroads for pedestrians to look at before they cross, while Choi said that there was a lack of road crossings in Estrada Lou Lim Ieok (盧廉若馬路). Choi therefore suggested that the government set up more pedestrian crossings to enhance pedestrians’ safety.
