A local man was arrested last week for stealing a suitcase near the Gongbei border checkpoint last Wednesday, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Leong Chi Seng said at a press briefing yesterday.

The 74-year-old jobless suspect is surnamed Chong.

According to Leong, a businessman from the mainland reported to the Public Security Police (PSP) last Wednesday that he had forgotten his suitcase when he arrived near the duty-free shops and was about to enter the Gongbei checkpoint to visit Macau. He returned to the scene to look for it but it was not there. The victim told the police that there was 10,000 yuan in cash as well as valuables such as luxury clothes, suits and shoes worth more than 170,000 patacas in the suitcase.

Leong said that the Public Security Police scrutinised the nearby area’s CCTV footage and identified Chong as the suspect. PSP officers arrested Chong on the next day in Rua Norte do Patane and seized the suitcase as well as most of the valuables at his home in the neighbourhood. Under questioning, Chong admitted he saw the unattended suitcase at the scene, stole it out of greed and took it home.

Chong told the police that he had thrown away some of the things he found in the suitcase such as “smelly underwear”.

Chong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft-by-finding charge, according to Leong.
