A public art exhibition entitled “Chakra” (脈輪) created by Italian artist Riccardo Cordero, which is part of the ongoing Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021 event, is on display in Praça do Tap Seac until January 3.

The exhibition is hosted by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) in conjunction with the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO).

According to a text on Art Macao’s website, “Chakra” is a sculpture made of corten steel.

Corten is a type of weathered steel, i.e., a steel alloy which does not require painting and acquires a stable, rust-like appearance over time.

The artwork aims to represent the core of the human spirit, according to the text.

The text quotes Cordero as pointing out that a food market is an important part of a city. His intention to create “Chakra” came after a tender was launched in the northern Italian city of Turin in 2001 for the redevelopment of Piazza Galimberti. The food market was therefore relocated. Several departments hoped to have an artwork that could recall the public’s memory of the food market and so “Chakra” was created.

The text underlines that the sculpture is formed in a circle that allows people to visit and appreciate the artwork from various perspectives and angles.

Cordero was born in 1942 in Alba. He graduated from the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin. He has been working on large sculptures since 1993 and have them situated in many places such as in Turin, at the Pennsylvania Sculpture Foundation, and in Mantua in Italy. Cordero has held solo exhibitions from 2009 to 2013 in Italy and in Switzerland.
