Macau People Power activists including its high-profile Vice Chairman Cheong Weng Fat yesterday petitioned Wang Zhimin, the new director of the Liaison Office of Central People’s Government in Macau, urging Wang to look into the city’s social problems such as the high property prices which most locals can’t afford.

Cheong and his fellow activists submitted their petition addressed to Wang to a staff member of the office in Zape. Wang, the central government’s top official posted to Macau, recently took over the helm of the office.

The activists also say in their petition that locals’ bargaining power has been undermined by “too many” non-resident workers, claiming that overspending on public construction projects showed the government’s failure to use the public coffers effectively.
