A press conference about the 28th “Creating a New Environment in Our Community 2022” (共創社區新環境 2022) event, was held yesterday afternoon at the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau (UGAMM) headquarters in Avenida do General Castelo Branco.

UGAMM is commonly known as Kai Fong in Cantonese.

The event will be held on Saturday from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Iao Hon Market Park on Rua do Mercado de Iao Hon. The event’s opening ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. There will be activities such as booth games, video broadcasts, plays, and talks. Moreover, there will be police cars, fire engines and firefighting equipment displays.

According to a statement by UGAMM, the event this year vows to promote better crime and fire prevention awareness for residents in order to enhance a safe living environment.

The statement said that the event is co-organised by UGAMM along with the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM), Public Security Forces (FSM), Judiciary Police (PJ), Fire Services Bureau (CB), and Environmental Protection Bureau (DSAP).

UGAMM Vice President Cheong Sok Leng, IAM Head of Civic Education Division Lam Mei Sio, PJ Head of Community Policing and Public Relations Division Chiu Chu Wai Man, and five other government and association representatives attended the press conference.

During the press conference, Cheong pointed out that this year will be the 28th year for UGAMM to co-host the event with government bureaus and departments. Cheong highlighted that minor crimes usually occur more frequently during the Chinese New Year. Therefore, the event vows to promote anti-theft, anti-robbery anti-drug activities as well as fire prevention through different kinds of activities, Cheong added.

According to Cheong, environmental protection has been one of the major concerns in urban development. Cheong stressed that environmental pollution has impacts on residents’ mental and physical health. Cheong said she hoped that the activities could address the importance of environmental protection such as saving energy and reducing waste.

When asked by reporters about UGAMM’s cooperation with the Judiciary Police on preventing fraud, Cheong responded that her organisation has always worked with the Judiciary Police on fraud prevention. Cheong highlighted that UGAMM has 30 service centres that assist and strengthen residents’ crime awareness. Cheong pointed out that UGAMM also promotes crime prevention using short videos, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When asked by a reporter about UGAMM strengthening drug prevention in collaboration with the Judiciary Police during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cheong said that usually there is less anti-drug promotion than other types of promotion by her organisation.
