Sports Bureau (ID) President Pun Weng Kun told reporters yesterday that all of the bureau’s venues, including ball arenas, have already established and implemented the use of the contact-tracing-function QR codes, adding that the bureau is “ready”.

Pun made the remarks yesterday afternoon after a press conference at MGM Macau that announced the details of the three-day 2022 MGM Macao International Regatta which starts at 9 a.m. today.

When reporters asked whether the bureau has enough staff to scan the QR codes upon visitor entry, Pun responded that the bureau currently has enough staff and will not be increasing them for the time being.

Regarding the upcoming Chinese New Year (CNY) holidays and the need for reducing social events, Pun commented that the bureau will “definitely cooperate with the government”.

Pun also shared that two events planned for the morning and afternoon of February 3 for the Beijing Winter Olympics will be hosted outdoors with a limited number of participants. Pun said the morning cycling event will allow around 200-300 participants, including staff. Pun added that participants must wear a facemask, even when cycling, while the afternoon event – a carnival – will restrict and divide the number of people entering the venue.

2022 MGM Macao Int’l Regatta sets sail today

The 2022 MGM Macao International Regatta will take place from this morning until Sunday, with 35 teams competing for the championship title in three competitions.

Details of the event were revealed at yesterday’s press conference at MGM Macau.

The event is organised by the bureau in conjunction with the Ursa Major Sailing Event Management, co-organised by the Marine and Water Bureau and the Macau Sailing Association, and supported by a string of other entities.

The event was attended by a number of guests including Pun; Ursa Major Sailing Event Management President Ma Man Wai; MGM President and Chief Strategic and Financial Officer Kenneth Feng Xiaofeng; as well as Jury Chairman Shao Xianli

A statement by the bureau said that the three competitions comprise the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cup Regatta (IRC), Macao Cup International Regatta (Beneteau First 40.7) unified design group and the International Catamaran Invitational (Hobie 16) unified design group. The IRC and the Macao Cup International Regatta feature 21 teams competing in the waters off Hac Sa Beach, while 14 sailing teams for Hobie 16 will compete for the championship in the waters south of the Inner Harbour Channel off the Macau Science Centre.

Moreover, the statement pointed out, a fleet parade will start today and on Sunday, both at 9 a.m., with vessels sailing from the Macau Fisherman’s Wharf passing through several areas and ending at Macau Tower.

The organisers have also arranged a “spectating activity” to watch the parade and the International Catamaran Invitational, reminding ticket holders to arrive at the Inner Harbour Ferry Terminal at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. A Hobie 16 boat is also displayed at MGM Macau’s Grande Praça until Sunday.

The statement also emphasised that the organisers will follow the Health Bureau’s (SSM) guidelines against the COVID-19 pandemic, while event details can be found at www.macaoregatta.com, or the “Macao Major Sporting Events” Facebook page and the “澳門國際體育盛事” (Macao Major Sporting Events) WeChat account.
