The University of Macau (UM) held its first online Open Day yesterday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with six types of activities.

According to an earlier statement by the university, the Open Day aimed to provide the public with the university’s latest information about admissions, educational features, and research results through the activities.

The online activities consisted of an opening ceremony; lectures; programme information; exhibitions; video tours; and games with prizes. Some activities were held on the online platform Zoom while some were uploaded from YouTube.

Some of the lecture activities included an admission talk for undergraduate programmes as well as lectures by UM professors such as ‘The Beauty of Cells’ and ‘What can sociological imagination do for you?’.

There were performances by different UM teams such as cheerleading and a dragon dance.

Exhibitions by different faculties showcased UM’s achievements and research results through videos and posters. For example, the Master of Science (M.Sc.) of Microelectronics had a laboratory demo video about wireless power transfer systems.

There were also online games such as ‘Our Smart City’ and ‘Biological Model Online Quiz’.

The statement by the university said that UM adopts a residential college system in order to implement its ‘4-in-1’ education model. The statement noted that UM has established three state key laboratories to promote research in microelectronics, Chinese medicine quality, and the Internet of Things (IoT) for smart cities, as well as to bring leading researchers from the nation and from abroad to contribute to Macau’s development, the Greater Bay Area (GBA), and the whole country.

The statement noted that UM is ranked within the 201-250 range in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, 5th in International Outlook, and among the top one percent in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) in 10 subjects.
