Six locals – four women and two men – reported separately to the police on Friday and Saturday that they had fallen victims to a credit card scam involving a purported courier company last week, involving a loss totalling over 77,000 patacas, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Ho Chan Nam said at a press briefing on Monday.

According to Ho, each of the six victims received an SMS text message recently from the “courier company” saying that the company was ready to deliver a parcel, however, due to lack of information the delivery could not go ahead. The “courier company” instructed the victims to click on the link provided in the message to fill in their personal as well as their credit card information.

After filling in the information for payment of the “handling fee”, the victims immediately received a text message from their respective banks informing them that someone had used their cards overseas for purchases ranging between 3,350 patacas and US$2,467.

The victims then suspected that their credit card information had been stolen and separately reported their cases to the police, involving a loss totalling over 77,000 patacas, Ho said.
