A local man was arrested on January 28 for driving while he was subject to a driving ban and also for using a phone while driving, a Public Security Police (PSP) spokesperson said at a press conference last Friday.

The 40-year-old suspect surnamed Vong told the police that he is a renovation worker.

According to the spokesperson, traffic police officers were manning a road block in Rua Central da Areia Preta on January 28 when they saw a driver using his smartphone. When stopped by the officers, the man was unable to show his driving licence and the officers discovered that he was driving even though he was banned from doing so. The officers took him to a police station for further questioning.

The police later discovered that Vong was involved in a traffic accident resulting in serious bodily harm in 2020 and consequently was barred from driving from October 2020 to early this month. Vong told the police that he violated the driving ban because he needed to drive urgently to his workplace on that day, the spokesperson said.

The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP). Vong faces a range of charges such as breaching a driving ban and using a phone while driving, according to the spokesperson.
