A photography exhibition entitled “Seeing the Light in Black and White” (黑與白的光影), which is hosted by Creative Macau and supported by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), is showcasing six local and Portuguese photographers’ work.

According to a recent statement by Creative Macau, the exhibition’s six snappers present their own style in their work.

“They created something new and original by manipulating the nature of the image or not…,” the statement underlines, stressing that all of the photographs aim, however, “to show the truth.”

The six photographers are João Miguel Barros (包偉鋒), Jason Lei (李昊樂), Ieong Man Pan (楊文彬), Tang Kuok Hou (鄧國豪), Francisco Ricarte, and Rusty Fox (黃霐雴).

The statement notes that in the course of the history of photography there have been opposing ideas about having texts to explain the images or not, based on the argument that a good photo doesn’t require a caption.

The statement also says that initially picture-taking was considered a way to represent reality objectively, without any touching up. Nowadays, however, most photographs are “adjusted” to become closer to what is desirable, the statement points out, adding that more recently photographic printing has used technology to digitalise images and correct the tone.

The photographs are for sale, priced at between 500 and 10,000 patacas.

As part of the government’s COVID-19 prevention measures, visitors need to wear a facemask, have their temperature checked and present a digital health code when entering the gallery.

The exhibition runs until February 19 at the Creative Macau gallery on the ground floor of the Macau Cultural Centre complex (澳門文化中心大樓地下) in Avenida Xian Xing Hai. It is open between Mondays and Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.
