An exhibition entitled “The End and Beginning: China Academy of Art Figurative and Expressionist Painting Group Exhibition” (終結與開端—中國美術學院具象表現繪畫聯展) is showcasing 31 artists’ work from the China Academy of Art (CCA) in Lou Lim Ieoc Garden’s Chun Chou Tong Pavilion (春草堂) to deepen art exchanges between Macau and the mainland, according to a statement by the Art Teacher Communication Association of Macau (ATCA – 澳門美術教師交流協會).

The exhibition is co-hosted by ATCA and CCA. It is sponsored by the public Macau Foundation (FM).

There are about 80 pieces of art on display, including mediums such as sketches, watercolours, inks, and acrylics.

The exhibition vows to present the relationship between art creation and philosophy of art by showcasing the CCA’s 30 or more years of theoretical and practical basis for their figurative and expressionist paintings, according to the statement.

Expressionism is a modernist movement in poetry and painting originating in Northern Europe. It aims to present the world solely from a subjective perspective.

Figurative art describes artwork that is derived from real object sources.

Philosophy of art is the study of the nature of art such as interpretation, representation, expressions, and form. It is distinguished from art criticism, the analysis and evaluation of a particular art work.

The statement noted that the exhibition aims to enable visitors to gain a “high level” of understanding and appreciation in the process of art creations by CCA professors and doctoral students.

The exhibition runs until Monday at the Chun Chou Tong Pavilion in Lou Lim Ieoc Garden. It is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Admission is free.

As part of the government’s COVID-19 epidemic prevention measures, all visitors entering the garden have to wear a facemask, have their temperature checked and present a digital health code.
