Suspect awaits trial for abusing son in 2018
A local woman was arrested on Tuesday for abusing her 8-year-old son at home earlier that day, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said at a press conference yesterday.
The 46-year-old suspect surnamed Choi told the police that she works as a casino dealer. She lives with her son and her husband.
The suspect has a previous record of domestic violence in 2018 for abusing her then four-year-old son, and the case is still pending trial, Lei said.
According to Lei, the Judiciary Police received a report from the public Conde de S. Januário Hospital Centre on Tuesday about a suspected child abuse case. The victim is an 8-year-old schoolboy who told his teacher on Monday about his painful wounds. Thus, the school took him to the hospital for treatment.
According to a medical examination, the boy sustained bruises on his back, head, hands and left lower abdomen.
Lei said that the boy was regularly physically punished by his mother multiple times every week. On February 17, Choi took a fork clothes hanger to beat the boy on the back as he had failed to wring the clothes dry before hanging the washing out.
Lei said that on February 18, Choi beat the boy on the back and head with the strap of her handbag because he was too slow eating breakfast and doing homework. Choi also slapped him. The victim’s father tried to stop his wife but to no avail.
According to Lei, PJ officers went to the hospital on Tuesday and took Choi to a police station for questioning. Choi refused to cooperate with the police. Lei said that the Judiciary Police have notified the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) and arranged for the victim to stay at a children’s shelter for the time being.
Choi has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing an aggravated domestic violence charge, according to Lei.
