A resident complained early last week that four healthy bauhinias variegata had been removed from Vasco da Gama Garden near Tap Seac, and on Friday the Municipal Affair Bureau (IAM) told the media that a landscaping subcontractor “accidently” felled the trees.

The resident said during a phone-in programme hosted by Ou Mun Tin Toi, the Chinese-language radio channel of government-owned broadcaster TDM last Monday, that the trees were being chopped down during the call to the station.

During the programme, the resident said that the landscaping workers claimed that they had been instructed by someone to cut down the four trees. The resident underlined that the trees felled by the workers did not have any obvious disease.

The bureau replied to Ou Mun Tin Toi in a statement on Friday that according to its investigation the incident was a mistake by the subcontractor, adding that it has already asked the company to re-plant new ones in the area. The statement underlined that in the future the bureau will closely inspect all outsourced work.
