An exhibition entitled “Poetry of Self-Criticism: Ceramics Solo Exhibition by Chan On Kei” (自虐之詩—陳安琦陶藝展) is on display at 10 Fantasia in S. Lázaro district, according to a statement by the gallery.

The exhibition is hosted by the Macau Sculpture Association (澳門雕塑學會) in conjunction with 10 Fantasia-A Creative Industries Incubator (瘋堂十號創意園) and the Creative Industries Promotion Association of St. Lazarus Church District, and sponsored by the public Macau Foundation (FM).

According to the statement, the exhibition showcases Chan’s six ceramic works. It is divided into two series, “Bite” (噬) and “Skeleton” (骨骼). The “Bite” series expresses the idea that in addition to being beautiful, the wearer must also endure the physical pain associated with the beauty, just like being attacked by high heels, which violates the function of shoes that are originally used to protect the feet, like a beauty-loving curse.

The “Skeleton” series is mainly based on the perspective of medical symptoms. The exhibition’s white bone shoes are used to simulate the physical diseases caused by the sequelae of high heels. Through repeated stacking and combinations, the shapes of bones are established to metaphorise the social framework and express a certain desire hidden in our genes, the statement points out.

Chan was born in 1993 in Hong Kong. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from the Macau Polytechnic Institute (IPM) in 2015 and her master’s degree from the Taipei University of Education, Department of Arts and Design in 2021. Chan joined a number of solo and group exhibitions between 2016 and 2021 in Macau, Taiwan, the mainland, South Korea, and Serbia.

The exhibition runs until May 22 in Room B05, at 10 Fantasia, which opens daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (closed in Mondays), at 10 Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro. Admission is free.

All visitors to the venue must wear a facemask, have their temperature checked and present a digital health code.
