The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) said in a statement yesterday that the problematic purple Chinese yam noodles in which Hong Kong authorities found an excessive amount of preservatives is not sold in Macau.

According to the statement, the prepacked noodles were tested to have an excessive amount of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). The bureau said that it immediately alerted the local food sector to halt selling the product, adding that the IAM officials also patrolled shops to confirm that the noodles are not sold in Macau.

The statement noted that the company which makes the noodles is called Zhan Zhan (沾沾), which is based in the mainland, adding that each package weighs 270 grammes, and the expiration of the affected batch is January 10, 2023.

The statement said that BHT is often found in precooked noodles, adding that even though consuming the preservative usually does not affect residents’ health, it still violates the local food safety requirement.

The bureau urged consumers to stop eating the product.
