A 34-year-old local jaywalker died after being hit by a radio taxi in Nape on Friday, the authorities said that day.
According to statements by the Fire Services Bureau (CB) and the Public Security Police (PSP) on Friday, the accident occurred outside Hang Kei Garden (恆基花園) in Avenida do Governador Jaime Silvério Marques (馬濟時總督大馬路) at around 5:30 a.m. on Friday, when the taxi hit the male victim when he was jaywalking.
The victim was rushed to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for emergency treatment where he was pronounced dead at round 10 a.m. after emergency treatment to save his life had failed.
The police said that the cabbie in his forties passed a breathalyser test.
The police have launched an investigation into the exact cause of the accident.
Jeep catches fire on Friendship Bridge
Meanwhile, a jeep caught fire when travelling from Taipa to the peninsula on Friendship Bridge yesterday morning, the Fire Services Bureau (CB) said in a statement.
The fire brigade received a report about the case at around 8:45 a.m. yesterday. Firefighters rushed to the scene to hose down the jeep and extinguished the blaze shortly afterwards.
The jeep was completely gutted.
According to the statement, firefighters believe that the fire was caused by a mechanical malfunction.
The driver got out of his car after discovering that a fire had erupted in the back of the vehicle, which did not have any passengers. He was not injured.
The bridge in the direction from Taipa to Macau was briefly closed to traffic during the fire-fighting operation.
