Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng sent today a congratulatory message to John Lee Ka-chiu on his victory in the 2022 Chief Executive Election of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), according to a statement by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS).
Hong Kong's former chief secretary for administration, who was the only candidate for Hong Kong's top job, won a 1,416 votes of 1,424 valid votes cast this morning by the 1,500-member Election Committee, surpassing the threshold of 750 votes and securing 99.4 percent of all ballots cast.
In his message, sent on behalf of the government of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR), Ho pointed out that Hong Kong and Macau share the same cultural roots and are closely connected in terms of geography, people-to-people ties, and economic and trade activities. The two cities have maintained effective exchanges and close cooperation, he added.
Ho said he is looking forward to the nation’s two SARs continuing their close partnership, in order to make further progress in the high-quality development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the SARs’ joint contributions to the nation’s overall development.
The GBA comprises the two SARs and nine cities in Guangdong province.
Their joint efforts, Ho underlined, will create further opportunities for development and new conditions for their citizen to live a better life, thereby writing a new chapter in the implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.
Lee's five-year term starts on July 1. He will succeed Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor at the helm of the Hong Kong government. Lam chose not to run for reelection.
