A salesman attempted to rape a former colleague who had left the company at the end of last month in a hotel guestroom last week, after the victim accepted the man’s “invitation” to a “farewell” dinner in the room, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon announced during a regular press conference on Friday.

The police arrested the man the next day after the attempted rape, which occurred on Monday last week.

Leng identified the suspect as a 32-year-old local man surnamed Ieng who told the police that he works as a salesman.

According to Leng, the victim is a local woman in her twenties who had worked for the same company as Ieng for around a month before leaving at the end of last month.

After knowing that the victim was leaving the company, Ieng “invited” her to a “farewell” dinner with him, which she accepted, Leng said.

At the invitation of Ieng, the victim went to a hotel in the peninsula’s central district last Monday night, Leng said.

When they met in the hotel’s lobby, Ieng proposed that they have a takeaway dinner in a guestroom, to which the victim agreed as she thought that Ieng had prepared “something special” for her, Leng said.

According to Leng, the victim and Ieng were drinking during their takeaway dinner in the guestroom. Later the victim sat down on the sofa for a rest after getting drunk.

Seeing the victim was drunk, Ieng forcibly kissed and molested her, but she pushed him away. However, Leng said, Ieng then forcibly took off the victim’s trousers and touched her vagina.

According to Leng, the victim kept resisting Ieng before she finally succeeded in pushing him away from her and running into the bathroom, where she locked the door and phoned hotel staff asking for help. Ieng then ran away from the scene.

The Judiciary Police launched an investigation after receiving the report, and identified Ieng as the suspect. PJ officers went to Ieng’s home in the peninsula’s northern district on Tuesday morning last week and arrested him, Leng said.

Under questioning, Ieng refused to cooperate with the police. Nevertheless, Leng said, PJ officers have gathered enough evidence showing that Ieng sexually attacked and molested the victim and attempted to rape her.

Ieng has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) for further questioning, facing an attempted rape charge.
