Kindergarten, primary and secondary school classes ran as usual yesterday, as the local observatory issued the Yellow* rainstorm and thunderstorm warnings in the morning before school started.

The Yellow rainstorm warning means that kindergarteners and school students can attend classes, unlike when the Black rainstorm warning is issued, which happened on Wednesday.

The Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) reminded parents yesterday before 7 a.m. that when a Yellow rainstorm signal is hoisted, they should consider whether to allow their children to go to school late or not to attend the classes, based on the weather condition at that time, while the schools should take the parents’ applications for late arrivals or absences from classes into consideration according to the circumstances. The bureau also once again urged schools, if need be, to rearrange and re-schedule tests and examinations.

Cross-border students who live in areas with bad weather conditions should stay at home for their own safety, the bureau added.

Macau-Shenzhen ferries still suspended

Meanwhile, according to a statement provided by the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) yesterday, all the ferry sailings between Macau and Shenzhen remained cancelled due to the impact of the rainstorms. The bureau urged passengers to check for the updated schedules from the ferry companies as the adjustments will be made based on the actual weather and sea conditions.

Weather bureau forecasts thunderstorms

Meanwhile, the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) said in a statement yesterday that the city’s weather these days is forecast to remain unstable due to the impact of a trough of low pressure, adding that the weather today will be unsettled and overcast with heavy showers and thunderstorms at times.

*Macau has a three-level rainstorm warning system, Yellow, Red and Black. According to the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG), Yellow means that “heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall over extensive areas, exceeding 20 millimetres in an hour, and is likely to continue.” Red means that “heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall over extensive areas, exceeding 50 millimetres in an hour, and is likely to continue.” Black means that “heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall over extensive areas, exceeding 80 millimetres in an hour, and is likely to continue.”
