The government should provide developers with incentives to build flats which young people can afford to buy, lawmaker-cum-developer Fong Chi Keong said on the sidelines of the annual Macau Youth Summit which was jointly organised by 10 local youth associations at the Macau Science Centre yesterday.

“For example, the government should give developers an incentive to redevelop Macau’s idle industrial buildings,” Fong said, adding the government should be more flexible when drafting rules for residents to buy home-ownership scheme (HOS) flats.

As a speaker of a symposium at the youth summit about young people’s difficulties to buy a flat, Fong said that Macau’s housing policy should be readjusted. He compared Macau’s situation to those of northern European countries, saying that the latter’s housing policies were well planned as they were not profit-oriented or meant to raise gross domestic product (GDP), but to enable their citizens to own property.
