The local government has expressed its strong opposition to the release of the 2021 annual report on the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) by the European Union, according to a statement by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) on Saturday.

The statement said that “with regard to Macau’s successful implementation of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ principle, the report contains unfounded accusations and counterfactual claims.”

According to the statement, the government urged the EU to halt at once its interference in Macau’s internal affairs, “as they are part of China’s domestic affairs.”

The EU only began to issue its annual reports on Macau after its return to the motherland in 1999. No such reports were issued by Brussels when Macau was still under Portuguese administration.
