A local man was arrested for blackmailing his ex-girlfriend after he found out that his past love was in a new relationship soon after they had broken up, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokeswoman Lei Hon Nei said at a regular press conference yesterday.
Lei identified the suspect as a 25-year-old university student surnamed Cheong, while the victim is a mainlander, also in her twenties, studying at the same university.
Lei said after the couple had broken up on March this year, Cheong discovered that the victim began to date another man soon after. According to Lei, Cheong demanded the victim pay back the money he had spent on their dates. Lei said after his demand was ignored, Cheong began to blackmail his ex-girlfriend, by making a threatening phone call to the victim’s mother.
Lei said Cheong had also threatened the victim by saying that he would release sexy photos of the victim as well as their sex tapes if she failed to pay him 50,000 patacas, leading the victim to pay Cheong 24,800 yuan (30,000 patacas) borrowed from her mother. Lei underlined that the victim reported the case to the police on April 22.
According to Lei, the Judiciary Police apprehended Cheong at his part time work place in Cotai on Monday, and Cheong confessed to his crime, claiming that he was upset by his ex-girlfriend for finding a new partner “too soon”. Cheong faces extortion charges and has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP).
